About us
Sony UK Technology Centre Product Approvals is a subsidiary of Sony UK and specialises in testing and certification for electrical safety and electro-magnetic compatibility. Until recently, our laboratories worked almost exclusively for SONY, but are now independent from Sony Design activities and our services are available to external clients.
Clients will benefit from an approvals team with more than 18 years experience in testing and certification of a wide range of consumer, industrial and professional products.
The operations are managed by Jimmy Tzimenakis, with over 18 years experience on Safety and EMC and a well known member of various Standards making committees in the UK and at International level. He is also the author of two very successful technical publications:

Safety Testing
Our Safety laboratories are externally accredited by INTERTEK, the UK National Certification Body and also operates under the European CCA Scheme and the International CB Scheme. Our labs are managed by an experienced safety engineer, Steve Hunt, who will be able to assist you with any of your enquiries.
EMC Testing
Our EMC test laboratory is FCC Listed and INTERTEK Accepted (under the CCA EMC Scheme) and is equipped with the latest EMC test equipment.
Our £3million EMC facility can offer:
- 3m Semi-Anechoic Chamber – testing up to 18 GHz is possible
- 3m Fully Anechoic Room
- 7 Shielded rooms equipped for latest EMC test equipment
- Testing for Light Industrial, AV, IT, Household Equipment and many other product categories
Our very experienced team is managed by Gareth Morgan, who is also a member of EMC standards making committees in the UK and at International Level.
Telecommunications Testing
We can offer testing to European Telecommunications standard TS 103021 (formerly TBR 21).
RF Performance Testing
Testing of DVBT products to D and E Book requirements.
Certification Service:
Application Services and Testing for Independent Safety Certification. Our extensive expertise in dealing with Certification Agencies across Europe and outside Europe would be invaluable to a client seeking third party Certification for their products.
Our Safety and EMC Laboratories operate according to the requirements of EN 17025 and as required by this standard, observe strict client confidentiality procedures. The Laboratory is also independently assessed by INTERTEK, allowing customer application to the Internationally recognised BEAB (INTERTEK) Approved and EMC mark schemes.

Environmental and Reliability Testing
We can offer a range of Environmental and Reliability Testing as outlined below:
Environmental Testing
Climatic, Cyclic and Thermal Shock tests are now possible by the use of our two large “Walk In” chambers and two smaller chambers with temperature and humidity specifications: - 40°C to +180°C 10% to 98% RH.
Co-ordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)
Accurate dimensional measuring in xyz planes of mechanical and electrical components.
Drop Testing
Low / High or Normal operating temperature Drop test on either packaged or un-packed product is available. This test will help to determine the packaging suitability and satisfactory operation of the product when subjected to unusual handling! 10% to 98% RH.
Flammability Testing
By using our extensive expertise in flammability testing of components, we can offer this test to clients wishing to determine the flammability properties of plastic materials and components.
Salt Spray Testing
Salt Corrosion with the option of acidic test. One chamber with Internal dimensions 825 x 635 x 875mm.
Vibration and Bump Testing
By the use of our Vibration bed and Bump Tester, we can carry out a range of transportation simulation tests on most products.
X.R.F. (X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy)
Clients wishing to determine the Pb, Cd and Cr of components and other alloys/metals including Brass, Aluminium and Pb-free solder, can now use our new and very sophisticated test equipment.
